Abstract

Osteoporosis is a common chronic condition in postmenopausal women and elderly person. Osteoporosis is a disease of rapidly increasing prevalence and high morbidity. The measurement of bone mineral density is gold standard for the diagnosis of osteoporosis, but FRAX has been developed to assess the risk of fracture. The first choice of treatment for osteoporosis is bisphosphonates. Some bisphosphonates can be prescribed for 5 years and then may stop according to patient¡¯s risk. Not all bisphosphonates are alike, so recommendations for discontinuation of bisphosphonates need to be drug-specific. Furthermore, recommendations about monitoring after discontinuation await further studies.
